Snap Inc. donated 500 Christmas hampers to Hackney Foodbank

Staff at Snapchat devoted this World Kindness Day to Hackney Foodbank.

The company, which runs the app Snapchat, donated 500 Christmas hampers to the food bank, packed full of treats for people in crisis and more than 80 staff spent the day packing hampers and making and writing cards.

Pat Fitzsimons, CEO of Hackney Foodbank, said: “The generosity of the Snap team means that this Christmas our visitors will have some of the treats many people take for granted during the festive period - chocolates, mince pies, crisps, cakes, crackers and more.  Our team had a brilliant day at the company’s London headquarters and were moved by the community spirit and compassion there.

“They decorated bags, wrote heartfelt cards and worked hard to fill hundreds of hampers. Their efforts have freed up our staff and volunteers to focus on the daily challenges of feeding people in crisis. This winter we’re expecting to provide emergency food for around 800 people per week and, against a backdrop of falling food donations, that’s becoming more difficult.”

Cordelia Bunnis, Philanthropy Programme Manager at Snap, commented: “Snap has celebrated World Kindness Day since 2018. It’s a day when our team from around the world can focus on spreading kindness and positivity in our local communities. This global day of service has become a beloved company tradition that makes our communities stronger and empowers our team to come together in service of others. We were delighted to work with Hackney Food Bank this year to donate 500 Hampers for Christmas. Their work is vital to those in need, and we were grateful to support and give back to such a meaningful cause.”

The hampers will be given out to people referred to Hackney Foodbank in the week before Christmas.  The food bank is also a recipient of London’s Winter Toy Appeal and will be offering new toys to ensure children don’t go without.

Hackney Foodbank is currently distributing around 14 tonnes of food to people in need each month. Visitors are referred via a range of agencies, including charities like the Citizens Advice Bureau and Mind.
