What's on: Photographer Neil Martinson to launch exhibition and raise funds for Hackney Foodbank

Rare photos of Hackney on exhibition to help Hackney Foodbank

It’s a Hackney you might not have seen before and you can view and buy them to support the Hackney Foodbank.

Unique images from photographer Neil Martinson’s widely acclaimed Hackney Archive, which documents the borough's people and places over the last 50 years, are going on sale in a fundraising exhibition for the Hackney Foodbank.

In the 1970s and 1980s, Hackney was a vivid mix of bombed-out houses, kids playing in the streets and factories abuzz with workers. Even then it seemed the borough was still recovering from World War II and the fag end of slum clearance.

Despite the crumbling Council estates, high unemployment and widespread poverty there was a vitality and resilience among local people. Hackney may have been poor but there was no need for foodbanks in those years.

These images capture times of work, protest and play on Hackney's streets. Framed photographs will be on sale and there will be a blind auction on the opening night. Also on display will be a selected preview of Neil Martinson's current project revisiting the places and themes from his archive.

You are invited to join us for Neil's Blind Auction Event on Wednesday 19 October from 6pm to raise funds for Hackney Foodbank with staff present to talk about how the support will help its services.

On display at Two More Years, 7 Roach Rd, Fish Island, London E3 2PA.

From 17th October - 15th November, open every day 9am - 11pm.

The nearest overground is Hackney Wick.
